BBB offers a variety of groups, all of which
run in 6 week series, free of charge.
Our Core Group is for women with symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety and their babies. It meets on Wednesday late mornings from 10 to 11:30 or afternoons from 12:30 to 2pm in Northwest Evanston and includes brunch or lunch. We now offer groups on Saturdays for women who cannot come during the week! A new group begins approximately every 3-4 weeks.
What Happens in A BBB group?
Group sessions are primarily devoted to sharing experiences that members need support around, as well as to strategies and resources they have discovered that might be useful to others. Sharing is done in an environment of acceptance and understanding. There are tears and laughs of recognition as participants share their struggles. Group facilitators provide support, resources, clinical knowledge, and research data to help members understand what is known about perinatal mood disorders, but our group is directed by the needs of the group.
The effect that the birth of a child – especially a first child – has on a couple’s relationship is something that new parents are often unprepared for. Resentment, jealousy and a loss of intimacy are not uncommon. We have come to know more about the range of postpartum complications for women over the past years, but more recently we have also come to understand that fathers, too, can have significant challenges adjusting to the birth of a baby. At Beyond the Baby Blues we offer an additional group with members and their partners or spouses, also free of charge and offered at a time convenient to all.
Recently, BBB began offering a session that is largely devoted to a post-partum yoga class presented by Lela Beem, E-RYT 500, RPYT of Grateful Yoga in Evanston.
Lela has taught yoga to prenatal and postnatal women since 2005. Since giving birth herself in 2013, she has become even more passionate about offering pregnancy, birth and postpartum support to women and babies. In the Beyond the Baby Blues support group, she offers an hour-long class for moms and babies that is targeted toward re-strengthening and centering, relaxation and coping with anxiety. She also offers prenatal and postnatal yoga her studio, Grateful Yoga of Evanston.
Our Prenatal Group is for women who are experiencing emotional distress during pregnancy and meets in northwest Evanston on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7pm and includes dinner.
